About Miami University (Ohio)

Miami University (Ohio), also known as MU, is a coeducational public research university located in Oxford, which is a city in northwestern Butler County, in the US state of Ohio, with a population estimated at a number of nearly 22 000 inhabitants.


MU was founded in 1809, and it is the 10th oldest public university in USA and the 2nd oldest in Ohio. According to the U.S. News & World Report, the university’s undergraduate program is 77th among national universities, MU being considered one of America’s Public Ivy universities, also being named a ‘’Research University with high research activity (RU/H)’’, by the Carnegie Foundation.


In addition to the undergraduate program, the university also offers master’s degrees in more than 50 areas of study, and doctoral degrees in 12, the largest one being doctoral degree in psychology. MU has been highly ranked by numerous important publications, besides U.S. News & World Report, for many of its educational programs, including by BusinessWeek, which ranked the undergraduate business program for the Farmer School of Business 16th among all U.S. undergraduate business schools, and 6th among public schools.


MU’s athletic teams are known as the Miami RedHawks, who compete in all 18 varsity sports for men and women, in NCAA’s Division I-A Mid-American Conference (MAC), except ice hockey, in which they compete in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, including in football, in which the university has a rich history, being nicknamed the Cradle of Coaches for its quality football coaches that leave its program. The RedHawks have experienced notable achievements, in many of their sports, over the years, including in men’s basketball, in which they appeared in 16 NCAA basketball championships.


Among the most resonant names, on the list of notable alumni, there are: Benjamin Harrison - 23rd President of the United States, Charles Anderson - 27th Governor of Ohio, James G. Jones - retired Major General, U.S. Air Force, John H. Patterson - founder of NCR (National Cash Register), Samuel Laws - inventor of the stock ticker on the New York Gold Exchange, Bruce Downey - Chief Executive Officer of Barr Pharmaceuticals, and Ernest H. Volwiler - former chairman, Abbott Labs and co-inventor, Pentothal, among others.
